Where’s the Biff?

It has not gone unnoticed that I have not posted anything for many weeks.

And when I say that it has not gone unnoticed, I mean, of course, that it has gone largely unnoticed.

I didn’t even notice it myself until just a few minutes ago when a vague, uneasy sensation began to come over me, not unlike a tainted burrito purchased from the trunk of someone’s ’73 El Dorado Cadillac in the parking lot of a truck stop out near the county line.

It was then that I realized it has been over 5 weeks since I posted anything.

In my defense, Christmas took up a lot of my time.  As did the Covid scare.   And my job.  And a general lack of anything to write about.

Oh, and did I mention the complete loss of my will to write?  That may have played some small part in the absence as well.

I am not alone in this.

There has been a veritable pandemic of writer’s block sweeping across the land.  Or maybe it was just my living room.

All I know is that, outside of signing my name to a few Christmas cards, and sending out a few uninspired emails at work consisting solely of the letters “FYI”, and writing “wash me” in the dust on the rear window of an SUV (not mine), I have written next to nothing.

It was not for lack of trying.  I sat down many times at the keyboard to write something.  But my brain was as blank as the inside of a sensory deprivation chamber.  Maybe even more so.  At least in a SDC you can hear your heartbeat.  All I could hear was the mocking sound of the fan in my laptop pretending to keep a CPU cool that was doing nothing more challenging than flashing a cursor in the upper left corner of a blank Word document.  That’s hardly worth turning on a cooling fan for.  In fact, it was hardly worth turning the computer on for.

And though I like wallowing around in self-pity and lethargy as much as the next guy (he’s standing right over there if you want to ask him yourself), the time has come to shake off the dust, clear away the cobwebs, and once again, like Sisyphus, to begin pushing this writing rock up the hill.

I have a good feeling about it this time.

  1. Biiiiii i i i i i i i i i i i i i if! I also noticed your absence, but my brain is so foggy from all the staying home, and only being able to get a peek at the outside world through a window (on or offline), that I have just let the weeks go by without poking you. Sorry about that. I am really happy to see you back, and I hope we’ll all get our writing stamina back soon. Take good care, Big Bro 😉 xx

    • Hiya, Sis! It’s so great to hear from you! I’ve been hoping you were well. And, I can definitely sympathize with what you said. I can tell my brain has slowed down quite a bit since staying at home. I don’t get near the visual and mental stimulation I used to … not that I got tons before. But at least the days are getting longer and the temperatures will be warming up, and so soon we’ll be able to get outside and see new things. Even if it’s just all the yard work I’ve been ignoring since November. Thank you for the welcome back, though “back” may be putting it too strongly. I come back sporadically. I will try to get better in the coming weeks. I hope you’re doing well! xoxo

    • Hi Suzanne! My apologies. It went into my spam folder. I really should check that more often. So thank you for checking in on me. 🙂 That means a lot to me. I’m doing well. I hope you and yours are doing great too!

  2. I noticed, but I was also busy not writing, so I just figured we were all on an involuntary strike no one told me about.

I ended up with six weeks off work due to some extremely-rare-holiday-time vacation days (this has literally never happened in the six-plus years I’ve worked at my day job) plus a COVID scare in the office and other circumstances, so I used it to get a LOT of book editing done, and began to declutter the house. So I guess I was productive in the areas I don’t usually have the option for during December. I’ll take it—productivity is productivity, after all.

Glad to see you’re back! Whether you have something to say or not is entirely irrelevant. We’ll still read it.

    • Hi Lynda! You are so right. I have been on an unintended sabbatical now for months. When the whole pandemic thing first started and I started working from home, I told myself that I was not going to become one of those people who lost all interest in the things I enjoy. Well … guess what? I became a garden slug. It is a tar pit that, once you set foot in, becomes almost impossible to keep from becoming fully submerged at some point. But now that spring is in the offing, I’m hoping I will begin to revive and begin enjoying things I used to do. I’m glad you’re doing well!

    That never stopped you before!😂
You know I love you, bro. Glad to see you back!

    • Hiya, Bro! Yep … you’re so right. Having nothing to say has never stopped me from writing before. And now it’s time to get back up into the saddle of nothingness and write off into the faux sunset and begin writing again. Thank you for your kind words! Always great to hear from you! I hope all is well with you and your family.

      • All is well here in British Columbia, the Canadian province with the least problems with C19, most others are under stricter lockdown measures. Might have to do with our temperate climate, allows us to be outdoors a lot more, than other provinces, who must huddle together inside in small groups. I have taken to drawing a lot more since the pandemic started, in addition to my fitness regime, which, truth be told, is a more meditative and therapeutic things than how buff I look (those days well behind). Wishing you and yours well, Biff.

        • Well if there is a silver lining in all of this, it is that we got to turn our attentions to things we really enjoy. I’m very glad to hear you’ve been doing a lot of drawing!

    • Hi! So great to hear from you again! And you’re right … we just need to push through the writer’s block and pandemic lethargy and just write. Hopefully I will be inspired to write more posts about absolutely nothing soon. 🙂 I hope you’re doing well!

  4. I also make liberal use of FYI in my work emails and I’m wondering if I can incorporate that strategy into my blog somehow. It would make things easier and help avert my own regular absences from the blogosphere. Although I have found the pandemic strangely inspirational from a blogging perspective.

    • Hi James! Yes, “FYI” is the greatest acronym in the history of business correspondence. It is essentially saying, “This was too boring for me to actually read, but I need to absolve myself of the responsibility of having read it, so now it’s your problem and not mine. Good night, and good luck.”

  5. After ICU, I sucked on oxygen at home for two months. Covid-19 kills the drive to write, you are right on that. I pecked on the keyboard in November and back up to speed. The funny thing that came out of my dealings with the virus, was on a follow up CT scan (almost bleed out in ICU) the doctor ordered an obstetric hematoma scan, to which I replied “I don’t have a uterus, anymore.” Keep pounding away. • Thank you, Pat! I hope you’re continuing to get better every day! And tell that doc to keep looking for the uterus. As a doctor, they should be able to find something if they keep looking hard enough. I know every time I go to the doctor, they always seem to find something that just seems to equal my out-of-pocket max.

  6. Yes we did notice, or at least someone of no importance in a far away seaside town on a different continent had a feeling something or someone was missing amongst the deluge of blogs about new year angst or about nothing in particular….

    • Hi Janet ! And you are of great importance! Definitely one of my most favorite people here in Blogworld. I have had an even greater amount of nothing to write about than usual, so it was harder to eke out blog posts about LESS than nothing at all. But I am hopeful things will get back to normal … back to the usual level of nothingness. I hope you’re doing well!
