I used block editor briefly and changed it back to the classic. Now WP switched automatically to WP classic and I couldn’t find something I used before such as quotation marks for quote, italic. I don’t want to switch to block editor yet. I don’t have 4 hours to do what you did!!
I didn’t want to switch either. I had played with it enough to know I hated it. But then they took away the classic option and I was stuck with the block editor. Apparently they are rolling it out in waves, and not to everyone at the same time. I guess they are trying to spread the pain? Who knows. But I’ve been using it for 2 or 3 weeks now and as much as I’d like to say I’m slowly starting to like it … I’m not. I still think it is a horrible editor for writers.
I know, it takes extra steps to do even just simple things. They switched mine to classic editor but not block editor yet. It still is not as convenient as the old one.
They forced me to the new block editor and I didn’t have the option of going back. I’m sure I’ll muddle through, but I probably won’t ever get to where I like it.
It happened to me tonight. I tried to schedule a post and something went wrong. It kept saying I wasn’t allowed to do this and that. The post went live. I finally stopped it and scheduled it, but it went on for a few seconds and I got a comment asked what happened to the post.
Brilliant.. at least the programmers have justified their existence with this dreadful so called advancement in blogging. Commercial customers will love it for their adverts… and if .org customers want it fine.. but give us .com users the continued option to not opt for it. I am not a luddite and I could get the hang of it but I don’t have the time to spend playing with it when what I have is perfectly adequate and I have all my formats already sorted. Now I sound like a grumpy old woman so will leave…thanks for sharing Sally.
Yes, I think you are absolutely right about the origins of the new editor. It was a bunch of bored programmers thinking, “Hey, why don’t we take something that works perfectly well and that everyone seems happy with, and screw it up beyond all comprehension!” And so they did.
And you’re absolutely right about what’s wrong with the editor. It makes us LESS efficient, not more. I spend more time trying to figure out how to do the most simple, rudimentary things. It is ridiculous. And even once I figure them out, something that used to be a single mouse click, is not 6 or 8 mouse clicks. How is that better?
It isn’t and perhaps they are looking for ways to dump bloggers who are not commercially viable and hoping most of us will drift away creating space on their servers for the moneymakers.

Hi, Amanda! I feel your pain. Everything I try to do now seems like it is at least TWICE as hard as it used to be. And I end up with all of these empty blocks everywhere that I have to then delete. And the block panel will appear on the left of the screen and I can’t seem to get rid of it except by exiting the draft and going back into it. It’s crazy!

Hi, Tempest! Thank you for the reblog. I have figured out how to use the “classic editor” block, but it still seems like extra steps that are unnecessary. But I will just have to learn to adapt, I’m afraid.
I’ve just been told by several “Happiness Engineers” that you must never cut and paste from MS Word or WPS writer into a WP blog post. And you have never been able to. Gosh, so what was I doing since 2015…….it must have all been a dream.
I have on occasion, though for some strange reason I find that I am (was) more creative using the WP classic editor than I am in MS Word. I guess I shall have to go back to writing primarily in Word, though.
And I agree. I think they should have added the block editor as an option to those who wanted to use it, but still allowed for people to use the classic editor if they preferred that. I don’t know why it had to be an either-or situation.

excellent post..and so indicative of the lengths that WP happiness-killers will go to make life enormously trouble-free for their bloggers. Kudos to you!
Thank you, Suze! It was a momentary inspiration. I am a little upset that that is my real handwriting, but I was never known for my penmanship. That’s why I learned to type at my earliest convenience.
As far as I can tell, yes, this is how you use it. I am slowly making my peace with the new editor, but not because I want to. It’s only because I have no choice. If “1984” taught us anything, it’s that we can become accustomed to anything given enough repetition, and the possibility of a rat chewing our face off.
You haven’t lived until you’ve been worked over by a squad of Happiness Engineers. Or is it “died”? Oh well … happiness is all relative, anyway. It is probably a result of eating too much soylent green.
It took me long enough to do that in 2D Paint! I can’t imagine having to do it in another dimension, too! Did I mention that I failed finger-painting in kindergarten?
Bwahaha! I feel your pain!

I had that same thought. We don’t put money in their pockets, so we’re kind of a nuisance to them. So, at least the feeling is mutual.

What’s wrong with ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’? Was the previous editor broke? I don’t think so.
Life is complicated enough without adding any more.
But you made a good showing! I love it.
