Essentially, I’m Non-Essential

Professor Biff 002

As of last week, I have joined the prestigious ranks of the Working From Home (WFH) club.

This quite a change for me.

All this year, even through the height (or depth) of the COVID craziness, I was deemed essential and had to get up every day and schlep into work.

Some days, it felt like I was the only schmo schlepping into work, since while I was schlepping, the freeways were eerily empty.

I’m not going to lie.  How I envied those who were working from home!  So much so that whenever I used the phrase “working from home” with my fellow essential employees, I put the word “working” in air quotes.

It was just my little passive-aggressive way of venting my jealousy.

I assumed everyone working from home was living the life of Riley, spending their days watching daytime TV, ordering things on-line, eating peeled grapes, and putting together jigsaw puzzles.

And now I, too, am working from home!  It’s like being allowed to sit at the cool kids’ table in the lunch room!

I’m finding that I quite like it, and not just for the primo snacking opportunities.

I was astounded to find that that there are very few interruptions when working from home, and that I can work on tasks from start to completion.  Back when I had to go into the office every day (even before COVID), my day was nothing but one long series of interruptions.  I bounced around like a ping-pong ball in a tornado all day long.

Now, I get to enjoy entire hours of uninterrupted time in which to do work.

I am getting all kinds of things done.

And, yes, the snacking opportunities alone are well worth the price of admission.

Never in my life have I been so excited at the prospect of being non-essential!

It reminds me of my days in high school and college where I was not only nonessential, but practically nonexistent!

So here’s to my new-found non-essentialism.

It is just like non-existentialism, but it pays a lot better.

And there are snacks.

    • So far I have managed to avoid the “Covid 19”. I am more concerned about developing prison pallor. I have to force myself to get up and go outside and get a little fresh air and sunshine. Unfortunately, in Texas in August, that can cause more health issues than it cures. 🙂

    • Hi, Colin! It’s always great to talk to a fellow non-essentialist. I was so caught up in the headiness of having my days to myself, that I had not considered the gin angle. If life has taught me nothing else, it has taught me that there is a fly for every ointment. I suppose I could be found guilty of being a pessimist, but I believe that charges were ginned up.

  1. Enjoy working from home! I still have to go in to the office for my (part-time) day job, but I do all my editing work from home and wouldn’t have it any other way. I can work the hours I need to, can plow through a bunch of stuff at once or stop & start as the day dictates. The amount of focus is amazing.

    Congratulations on your nonessential status!

    • Hi Lynda! Great to hear from you. I’ve been wondering how you were faring in the present insanity.

Like you, I am finding that I very much like working from home. In fact, it is frightening how much I enjoy it. I am very much afraid that if they ever call us back to work that I will throw a tantrum and put up a fight. Because, having fed on honey-dew, and drunk the milk of Paradise, I am loathe to be pulled from this sunny pleasure dome and thrown back into the seething chasm of ceaseless turmoil.

But the lure of a paycheck will likely do the trick.

      • I’m not going to lie, it will be tough to go back to wearing real pants every day. During those initial months of sheltering at home, I had minimal office hours for the day job, and it was a really nice atmosphere with the handful of us who had to be there—we showed up one day per week, rehearsed, recorded, and went home. I was almost disappointed when the restrictions were adjusted to allow up to 25 people.

        • I still wear pants every day, although I have given up the wool slacks and Oxford button-down shirts for cargo shorts and a polo shirt. I got used to that far quicker than I thought I would. I am loving the working from home, and don’t particularly miss the “face time” with my co-workers. There are select people I miss, but on the whole I am perfectly happy being a very productive hermit. 🙂

    • Hi Lorne!

I have heard as much. For my first week I have dined on nothing but salads, trail mix (almonds, craisens, walnuts, and dried chickpeas), oatmeal bars, and water. That has gone so well, that next week I intend to step up my game to chocolate chip cookies, beef jerky, and rum-and-Coke.

      Baby steps.
