Biff Rambles On About … Deep In the Heart of Taxes, Water We Here For, and Exercising my Writes

Biff Hiking #4

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written one of these rambling posts, so let’s just roll up our sleeves and get started.

I also recommend rolling up your pants legs as well.  We might go hiking through a bog, and no one likes ruining a perfectly good pair of dungarees.

A Tax on my Person

At the moment, everyone is freaking out about you-know-what.

Yes, that’s right.  Tax day is looming here in America.  In less than a month we will all be cringing and sending very large checks off to the gub’mint.

Everyone hates paying taxes.

Honestly, though, I don’t mind paying taxes.  It is the price of admission we pay for living in a society and enjoying all of the freedoms, comforts, and protections thereof.

What I actually hate is hearing stories about how our tax dollars are squandered.   And I’m not alone.  Everyone is angry about that, to a person.

The REAL problem is:   is that we can’t decide on a definition of “squandered.”   My definition probably is vastly different from someone with different societal and political views from me.  One man’s “squandered” is another man’s “money well spent”, and vice versa.

Believe it or not, I actually take comfort in this.  Democracy is working great when all of us are simultaneously happy with and frustrated at our government.  That, my friends, is true equality.

So pay your taxes.  It is like paying someone money to serve you your favorite dessert while dropping an anvil on your foot.  That is pretty cheap entertainment.

The Rain Will Be Mist

The spring rains have arrived in Dallas, much to everyone’s relief.  We have gotten about 19 inches so far this year, which is pretty darn good considering we’ve been distracted by other things (e.g. barking dogs, thistles, silverfish, etc.) and not really giving it our all.

When it comes to rain here in Texas, the taps usually turn off abruptly sometime in May, and do not turn back on again until about October.  Therefore, we have to get all the rain we can between January to May to have any chance at all of being able to make it through the summer with enough water.

Oddly enough, even when we haven’t had a drop of rain in a year and the lakes are dry as dust, the humidity in the air will stand at 100% every day.

It is like Mother Nature is just taunting us.  It is her version of “I’m not touching you!”

The Dismount

Well, that’s about all I have for today.  I have had a wicked case of writer’s block that has lasted since about mid November until now.  As you can see, it hasn’t gotten any better.

I should get points for trying, though.

I just hope they’re not taxable.

  1. I actually sent off the big checks a while back (estimated taxes) and am now due some not quite as big refunds. Trouble is, the folks who should be attacking that stack of tax paperwork to process it are probably working at quite the social distance from the paperwork…

  2. I never mind paying taxes, mostly because they come off my paycheque upfront, so I rarely have to pay any more at tax time. Either way, it all goes to healthcare and social services, and a variety of things that I’m thankful we have up here:-)

    • I’m the same way. I never look at my check. I have no idea how much they are taking out and, frankly, I don’t really care. It’s not like I can do anything about it.

And, unlike you, we don’t get free healthcare or social services. I’m not sure what the heck we get, but I’m sure it’s worth it, whatever it is. 😀

    • Thank you! I’m still trying to get back into the swing of writing. I haven’t done much of it for half a year. And, unlike riding a bike, you do actually forget how after a while. So I appreciate the encouragement. I’ll be dropping by your site more, too! So keep up the good writing.
