An Early Saturday Morning Disquisition

Some of you may be asking, “Biff, why on earth are you up at 6:30 in the morning on a Saturday?  We know you like to sleep in on Saturday.”

The answer is a resounding, “I don’t know.”

Sometimes, in spite of our best efforts to sleep in, our bodies will have none of it.  There may be external factors that accelerate the getting-up process:

  • A cat jumping onto your chest from the floor 3 feet below for no particular reason.  It then leaves indignantly when you groggily ask it what it wants.
    .
  • A dog sighing heavily and continuously, wanting to be let outside for a quick snuffle about and some private business before returning to his own bed to go back to sleep.
    .
  • An inconsiderate neighbor who decides to get a jump on his lawn work before it gets too hot outside.
    .
  • A helicopter who inexplicably flies ten feet above your roof-line on its way to who-knows-where.
    .
  • A murder of crows who decide to perch on the eaves just above your bedroom and have a noisy argument about whether Congress is likely to take up the effort to repeal the controversial Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
    .
  • Any of a million other things

But today I woke up for no apparent reason at all.  No alarms had gone off.  The coffee pot, which I had programmed to turn on at 6 AM, had not turned on yet.  Nothing in the house (just as in the famous poem) was stirring, not even a mouse.

But whatever the cosmic machinations that have caused me to be awake at this completely unnatural hour on a Saturday, I have decided that I should at least get a blog post out of it.  When life hands you lemons, throw them vigorously at the murder of crows on the eave of your house.

It is too early to tell what sort of day today will be, but yesterday was excellent.  I took the day off from work so that my daughter and I could spend the day together before she starts her new job next week.  We went on a little adventure to a nearby town, which I will write another post about later today when I have had a chance to sort through the photos.

That, my friends, is what we in the blogging business call “a teaser”.  I hope you’ll tune back in to see what I have just so expertly foreshadowed.  And I hope I will not disappoint.

Okay, I think that is about it for now.  Even though my body is awake and up and moving about, my brain is still fumbling through the kitchen, looking for where someone seems to have hidden the coffee.  You may not have noticed that I am rambling incoherently, but if you have known me as long as I have, you’d know.

Have a wonderful Saturday!  I’m pulling for you!

  1. Enjoy the time with your daughter, although it might be better spent indoors playing online poker, watching people fall down in diverting ways on Youtube. Different strokes, I guess . . .
Q: is the heat leading to an increase in road rage (and overall low simmering anger) like it is here in Vancouver, altho our temps are in the balmy 80s? I suppose one must stay within their AC cocoons.

    • Thanks, Wilt! I am very thankful that she and I have a very good relationship and enjoy doing things together. Though, I have to admit, I do love videos of people falling down.

A to your Q: The heat we’re experiencing is just normal summer weather in Texas. I can’t say for certain that it leads to an increase in road rage incidents, though it wouldn’t surprise me. On the other hand, as you pointed out, no one wants to do anything that requires them getting out of their car and out of the air conditioning. That helps us to let a lot of things slide that might otherwise annoy us.
