The company I work for has all kinds of mandatory on-line training modules we have to take, or else face the threat of swift unemployment.  Most of these fall under categories such as ethics, sensitivity, workplace harassment or things like that.

This is all fine and good, but as I was taking my mandatory workplace harassment training recently, I found myself wondering if there are actually people out there who need this training.  The video vignettes they show, present situations that are so blindingly obvious as to who is the bad guy and the behavior that is inappropriate, that it is hard to believe that there are people out there who don’t have a clue that their behavior is that boorish.

On the other hand, there must be people out there like that, or the rest of us wouldn’t be forced to take the training.

And then I wonder if those people are so clueless that they are incapable of recognizing themselves in the training videos.

  1. I attended a mandatory sensitivity training with a gay friend and a black friend. We’d all managed to avoid the previous ones so, this was the one for slackers. We did not take if very seriously. The black woman suggested that she’d be happier if more “sistahs” were cooking the fried chicken in the cafeteria. I recommended that gays wear special armbands so we’d be especially nice to them. I really didn’t want to say anything, but the gay man was expecting some sort of irony. By the end, we’d learned nothing, and walked out together to interact as people…

    • Sensitivity training as a humor goldmine. However, I have found that there few people on earth with less of a sense of humor that sensitivity trainers. Also, it’s best not to get on their bad side. After all, they can give one a failing grade in sensitivity 101 and soon thereafter one will find one’s self on the street. You might say that they are very insensitive towards people with senses of humor.

    • Heh, my former boss, who just happened to be gay, made many witty retorts in regard to my being a straight man. Yes, folks, reverse sexism reared its ugly head. So, I pinched his bum. There’s not even a term for that.
