An Open Letter To My Fellow Bloggers

Panicking

Hey!  You know what’s a full time job?

Reading other peoples’ blogs.

Man!  I try to keep up.  I really do.  The more people I follow, the more things pop up on my “Followed Sites” stream.  And I try to read them.  I try to be a good follower.  I am liberal (though sincere) with my likes.  I even try to comment once in awhile.  But after an hour or two of that, it dawns on me I haven’t written anything in my own blog.  So I click the “Write” button and start to dash something off.

But then I have to deal with Bloggers Guilt.  That’s the feeling of guilt you get when you’re writing in your own blog and realizing that dozens of posts by fellow bloggers are slowly scrolling down into oblivion in your “Followed Sites” stream.   There’s no keeping up.

So I read and like and comment in a slapdash manner.  That makes me the equivalent of that flaky, unreliable friend that you can’t ever count on to show up on time or be where they’re supposed to be.  And when you are moving and need someone to help you, they’re no where to be found.

I’m sorry.  I don’t want to be that way.

Please accept my sincere apologies!

And if you could all stop writing for about a month so I could catch up, that would be great.

Thank you for your consideration.

  1. This year has been with many challenges and changes. Keeping up with life has been more than enough to deal with. Usually I am good I like to read the blogs I follow as they are important to as I hope I am to them. I have been unable to keep up the same good standard this year. I have failed to read and write as life has not allowed me to do so. Hopefully in the new year 2018 I will be more productive. Wishing you many blessings and miracles for 2018.

    • I understand completely, Ann. So many things are published on any given day that I can’t possibly read it. I think even if I didn’t have a job and could read blogs 24/7, I still wouldn’t be able to keep up!

Thanks for reading and for the comment! Drop by any time.

  2. I see you’ve already gotten a ton of replies which add to the problem! I used to have 5000 emails in my queue when I was on Twitter. Publishers think that site is wonderful and I know Trump loves it, but I’m off it and plan to never use them again. It took me months to get my list down below 1000. Now I run 500-700 because I’m still behind. Since I’m taking Thanksgiving off, I’ll probably end up over 600 on Friday. Just work at your own pace and don’t let the long line upset you. I delete all ads first which gets rid of 10-20. Then I go through some old ones before looking at the new ones. You may have noticed that. I’m not reblogging as much as I’d like, but hopefully that will resume. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

    • Thanks for the advice! I don’t think I’ll ever have to deal with the numbers you mentioned, but I suppose I can dream. 🙂 I’ve never done the Twitter thing. It just doesn’t sound like anything I’d be interested in.

Thanks for the comment and I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving, too!

  3. So true! It is a daily struggle to keep up!

HOWEVER, I’ll take the struggle to keep up with comments over 50 LIKES and the sounds of silence any day! 😄😉

  4. Reblogged this on Jerry Brotherton and commented:
I know that I am a comment junkie and a ‘like whore’ so I feel the way Biff does. I feel remorse when I do not have time to read all the posts of my fellow bloggers. Sometimes, it is difficult to not sound generic when replying to the comments my friends have left on my posts. I feel your pain brothers and sisters.

  5. Reblogged this on Rhapsody Bohème and commented:
This hit home as I constantly find myself running out of hours throughout the day, especially when it comes to maintaining all aspects of my blog. It’s suppose to be fun and bring a sense of contribution, it suppose to be a platform for sharing experiences and help others, and yet it’s not always easy to balance it all. We write to be heard and because we have something to share, in return we try to read as much as we can, knowing others share the same passion. I often feel that I fall short of the reading part and Biff’s suggestion of everyone taking a month long break sounds brilliant as I frantically try to catch up. I was surprised to see so many others feel the same way and yes the more blogs we follow, the more we like to get to know by reading them. It takes time and I’m very grateful for those special bloggers in my life that know that I will always be back to catch up when I fall behind. The ones who understand and don’t stop visiting my site when it takes me a little longer. Thank you so much, you all make this amazing community. XO

  6. Wow, I read your words and they are as if they are coming from my lips. Definitely spoken from my heart, I am amazed to see how many of us struggle with this as we try to balance it all. My full time retail job seems to be getting more and more in the way of reading and writing haha and I couldn’t have said it any better. Thank you for being a voice for us all and for this clever post.

    • Thank you for your kind words, Rhapsody … and definitely for the re-blog! I had no idea so many other bloggers were struggling with the same thing I was. It is comforting to know that we are not alone in our journey. Happy writing!

  7. This is so true! Talk about reading my own thoughts. I have days like that when I’m swamped with events from my own life that I’m literally scrabbling to do my post and still try to catch up on posts I’ve missed. Great post very relatable. Thanks for sharing. You are not alone. Have a great week!

  8. Well written! I am glad I am not the only one feeling constantly behind 🙂 It’s especially bad when you have a travel day and can’t get to the computer/phone. And, for the record I am not that popular, so it can happen to anyone! Thanks for the thoughtful post 🙂

    • Thank you, Dtills! I appreciate the positive feedback. And yes, when there are travel days, all bets are off regarding blogging. I’m not that popular either, but I think I wrote a blog that struck a chord with a lot of people. Keep on bloggin’!

  9. Every now and then I just have to back off all social media to finish a book… like now!! Yes, I’ll feel guilty but then I feel guilty when I know I should be writing and I’m on social media. Never feel guilty when i leave the housework though!!!

    • Thank you, Judith! And yes, it’s sad that we can’t seem to appreciate what we’re doing, for thinking about all the things we’re NOT doing. Perhaps we should all practice living in the moment more. We shouldn’t feel guilty for reading/writing/etc. And I definitely agree with you about housework. I never feel guilty about not doing that. 🙂

  10. It’s our curse Penny! The more we post the more comments we have to respond to. The better we get, the more followers we get. I spend most of my time writing responses to comments OR writing comments on posts I’m following. It’s a real Catch-22. My creative writing seems to have taken a back seat to my responsive writing. Kind of upside down huh? You wrote this post on the 15th and I’m just getting to comment on the 20th… Sigh… What to do, what to do? 😃

    • Thank you for the reblog, Penny! I am very appreciative. And, you’re quite right. I’ve spent my evening answering all of the comments I’ve gotten today. But it is a good problem to have and I’m very thankful. Thank you!

  11. I do the same thing and also feel guilty about it. I follow plenty of great blogs, but I don’t feel like I have enough time to read all of them. It’s easy to spend a few hours like you said just reading everyone else, but then you never get anything written. Thanks for posting this and letting me know I’m not the only one. Great post.

  12. I thought I was the only one who was falling farther behind! Reading favorite bloggers IS a full time occupation. And the guilt was bugging me. Now I make an effort to let people know I am enjoying their writing but I drop by now and again….
Perhaps I will just “ditto” on your post here…..

  13. Biff Biff Biff… Dear Biff Stock Pow! No need to appologize, since a lot of us are in the same situation… I actually think I suffer from a weird bipolar blogging disorder, where I sometimes have to forget about the great posts there to read and the comments left in my inbox waiting for a reply to write my own stuff… And days when I’ll just let my blog si there, and spend all my free time trying to read everything that I missed while trying to be entertaining…

Someone has to come up with a revolutionary invention that could solve our problem for a couple of easy payments of 19.99$!! Because, there “has” to be a better way!!

  14. I’m starting to get to that place where it’s hard to keep up! I go to work and come home and it takes me an hour or two to get through all the posts. So sometimes, like you, I fail to fully read everyone’s posts and then I have guilt as well. But if I don’t check daily then I fall behind on everybody’s postings. I feel bad if I schedule a post and I can’t respond to those comments until later 😅 but at least we try, right?

  15. Don’t worry, I find it tough keeping up too! I’m struggling just replying to the comments on my own blog – let alone catching up on reading everyone elses in return! that reminds me… I have about 50 unaswered comments on my blog that I should get on to ASAP.
